Promotion and Tenure
As a faculty member in the College, you are expected to promote our commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship and service, as well as academic freedom of thought, teaching, learning, inquiry and expression. Our promotion and tenure guidelines conform to VCU’s faculty promotion and tenure policies and procedures of Virginia Commonwealth University, with procedures specific to the College and its programs, and establish and define the standards for appointment, promotion and tenure within the College.
The best judges of a faculty member’s contribution are colleagues both within the university and within the profession. Our guidelines, along with the university and approved departmental guidelines, are designed to facilitate peer evaluation; in doing so, we strive to ensure established standards of faculty performance while protecting the rich blend of unique talents and diverse accomplishments that constitute the core of the College and the university.
Timeline for 2020-21
April 15, 2020: Chairs/directors provide CHS Faculty Affairs with names of candidates/committees.
April-May: Peer committee members charged.
June 14, 2020: For candidates requiring external review, candidates email mini-dossier (scholarship) to committee chairs; external reviewers identified.
August 16, 2020: Candidates upload all materials to Blackboard P&T sites by 11:59 p.m.
August 17, 2020: Peer committee members provided access to Blackboard P&T sites by 9:00 a.m.
September 30, 2020: Peer committee report, scanned signature page and minutes uploaded to Blackboard. Peer committee access removed at 11:59 p.m.
October 1, 2020: Chairs/directors provided access to Blackboard P&T sites by 9:00 a.m.
October 14, 2020: Chair/director reports uploaded to Blackboard P&T sites by 11:59 p.m. Materials due to chair/director for term faculty not reviewed by a peer committee (instructor to assistant professor).
October 15, 2020: College P&T Committee provided access to Blackboard P&T sites by 9:00 a.m.
December 1, 2020: College P&T Committee report and the chair/director report for term faculty not reviewed by a peer committee submitted to CHS Faculty Affairs by 11:59 p.m.
January – February 2021: Candidates meet with dean to review peer committee, chair/director and dean’s reports.
