Katie Hewitson joined the finance department in the dean’s office in 2022. Learn more about her career path, her miracle baby and why she wants to return to VCU as a student.
What brought you to VCU?
I studied political science and criminal justice at VCU years ago, but I didn't finish. Instead I started working in finance as a banker. Finally, I am back and loving my experience as a fiscal tech and staff member. VCU offers flexibility, diversity and a level of comfort that's hard to find elsewhere.
Can you describe what you currently do in your role at VCU? What does your day-to-day look like?
Currently, I help with any fiscal needs within the College, from purchase orders and invoicing to travel reimbursements or any other kind of financial order that the College requires. I love helping people under a time crunch and getting things done quickly, which is a big part of my job. It’s often on short notice that faculty attends conferences or guests come to visit VCU. Lots of changes happen at the last minute, and I keep all of that orderly and timely. I learn new skill sets every day with the College of Humanities and Sciences.
Tell us about the things you are most passionate about.
I am most passionate about my family, friends and pets. I have two cats – Happy and Socks. They are my world. I am also very passionate about my job and helping people the best that I can. My daughter Emma Kate is 12 years old. She was born at 27 weeks and weighed a pound and 14 ounces at birth. She loves soccer and reading. She has a huge heart and loves animals, just like her mom.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I come from a financial background in banking and the finance department of Henrico County. I hope to finish my bachelor’s degree at VCU in psychology and plan to start taking classes in 2024.
