What does an average workday look like for you?
I sit down with a notepad and make a list of things that I need to do for the day. I usually start my day by responding to urgent emails. I have meetings throughout the day, and if I’m not in one, I’m working on budget-related things. That means cleaning up and developing budgets and working on policy with associate deans or with the dean on her specific initiatives. It’s incredible how many times I have to pivot throughout the day to do something different.

What is your favorite part about this job?
Engagement is very important to me, particularly in creating a family or community feel at a university. Much of this comes from targeted investments. One of my favorite events is the CHS Block Party, as it showcases our majors and brings students together. I believe it’s essential for students to have a supportive community when they’re away from home—someone to lean on, talk to and form friendships with. Removing barriers and creating an environment where someone can say, “Hey, I’m having a bad day,” and receive support from the community can truly make a difference.
How long have you been at VCU and what is your favorite part about this campus?
I’ve been at VCU for about 18 months—2 years in May. My favorite part is the diversity. I was at a college before this that had no diversity and was very plain. I feel like we’re doing right here. Diversity is everything. Giving everyone equal opportunities is part of why I love VCU so much. We are no longer considered a PWI, which is hard to find, so VCU is also unique in that sense.

What are some of your hobbies and interests?
Spending time with my family is my favorite way to spend my time. We have a very close family and my kids are all friends with one another. I play golf but I’m bad at it. I also like playing volleyball and I’m a huge fantasy baseball nerd. I also love to travel. My dream place to travel to is Italy or Greece because I love Mediterranean food. My wife and I are big foodies.
What’s a fun fact about you that not many people know?
I have a second-degree black belt. I haven’t trained in a couple of years due to time constraints but it's the second time I’ve gotten one. I got one back when I was a kid and my dad owned a karate studio. When we both got older, we went back and both them again together.
