The College of Humanities and Sciences is pleased to announce that Rebecca Segal, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, has been appointed acting chair of the Department of Statistical Sciences and Operations Research.
Rebecca was appointed chair of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics in April after serving in an interim role, and is a professor of applied mathematics. Her research is in the area of mathematical biology where she works on projects ranging from fluid dynamics of organisms to cell dynamics in disease processes such as wound healing and antibiotic resistant infections to predictive modeling of sickle cell pain and coral growth. She is a PI on two NSF grants and currently collaborates with VCU colleagues in engineering, life sciences, psychology and internal medicine. Recently, Rebecca served as interim chair of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics . She currently organizes a national research workshop for women in mathematical biology and has served on the executive committee of the Association for Women in Mathematics.
The college would like to thank David Edwards, Ph.D., former chair of the Department of Statistical Sciences and Operations Research, for his leadership. David is leaving VCU to be chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. We wish him the best!
