Graduate Teaching Assistants and Graduate Research Assistants
Hiring Process
Departments work with their human resources coordinator and the graduate program coordinator to complete graduate assistant spreadsheets for each academic year (these will be sent by the graduate program coordinator to each department).
The HRC sends contracts for the department and GTA or GRA to review and sign through DocuSign. Contract dates are typically Aug. 10 - May 15.
New graduate assistants must complete the new hire process before they can begin working.
Graduate assistant appointments are equivalent to 20 hours per week. Graduate assistants may not hold another job without permission from their department graduate director and cannot work more than 29 hours per week. International students who are employed as graduate assistants may not hold another job during the fall and spring semesters.
Graduate assistants are hired as exempt employees and do not clock their hours in a timesheet.
Departments interested in hiring graduate assistants over the summer should work with their HRC and the graduate program coordinator to determine the appropriate hire process. Departments should be prepared to provide a brief description of the work that the graduate assistant will be completing, justification for the position, salary and number of hours per week the graduate assistant will be working when they submit their request.
