If you’re walking the halls of the new STEM Building, chances are you’ll run into Mike Morris. Between his wild curly hair, ever present lab goggles and Disney-themed t-shirts, Mike is easily spotted. He’s been the stockroom manager for the Department of Chemistry for the past 12 years.
Learn more about Mike, his love of chemistry and his dream career as a young kid.
Describe your role as a chemistry stockroom manager.
The stockroom is located in Oliver Hall, but the labs are in the STEM building, so I run back and forth between the two buildings. I also manage all shipping and receiving for the Department of Chemistry. Besides undergraduate needs, we have chemicals and solvents that graduate students and research labs use. I take note of what is being used heavily and order based on that.
What brought you to VCU?
I studied at James Madison University and majored in chemistry. I really enjoy the collegiate lifestyle and atmosphere. VCU was the first place that offered me a job in 2012. I really enjoy my job and have been here ever since.
How did you discover your love for chemistry?
In high school, I wanted to study foreign language. I had an AP language class and realized this was not for me. I was also taking AP Chemistry at the same time. I loved my teacher and really liked the course.
What is your favorite local Richmond restaurant?
Jack’s Brown Beer and Burger Joint is my favorite Richmond restaurant. I host trivia there on Tuesday nights. My favorite thing on the menu is Greg Brady burger. This burger has mac-and-cheese and barbecue chips in it.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I really enjoy cycling. I did the Capitol Trail this past summer from Richmond to Williamsburg. I used to build Legos as a kid. During COVID, I developed it as an indoor hobby, and got back into Lego building.
What is a fun fact about you that nobody knows?
When I was little, I always wanted to be a figure skater. I love figure skating from the Olympics and found it fun to watch. I have not tried figure skating though; my balance is atrocious.
